The Felidae Wildcat and Species Conservation Center Barnim is a private facility located on the outskirts of Berlin in idyllic Brandenburg. Here, visitors can discover an impressive variety of around 25 predator species and around 65 individuals on around two hectares. The focus of the center is on the fascinating large and small cats that live here in a protected environment.
Animal welfare with passion and commitment
The Felidae Center is committed to the conservation of endangered species and is actively involved in international breeding programs that promote species conservation. Particularly noteworthy are the clouded leopards, jaguarundis, fossas and snow leopards, which are kept as part of European breeding programs. Close cooperation with regional wildlife rescues also enables the center to actively contribute to the protection of native fauna.
The special feature of the Felidae Wildcat and Species Conservation Center lies not only in the impressive animals, but also in the unusual visitor concept. In order to promote an intensive exchange between the visitors and the animals, the explorations take place in guided tours. This allows staff to address specific topics such as nature and species conservation and answer individual questions. In contrast to traditional zoos, the guided tours also reduce the stress experienced by the wild animals.
The story behind the species conservation center
Founded by Renato Rafael, a passionate vet, he fulfilled his dream of keeping cats of prey in 1997. In 2015, the Felidae Wildcat and Species Conservation Center finally opened its doors to the public. The center attracted particular attention with the rescue of a small tiger, Diego, who found a new home at the Wildcat Center after being taken in. The construction of a spacious tiger enclosure was made possible thanks to financial support from the state of Brandenburg.
The design of the enclosure places great emphasis on the recreational value for humans and animals. Visitors can relax in the natural surroundings and also enjoy the diverse plants, including water lilies and sequoias. The pond terrace is ideal for outdoor events and provides the perfect backdrop for a relaxing day at the conservation center. All in all, a visit is a great way to learn about species conservation while experiencing some of the most impressive predators up close. The center not only offers a unique experience for animal lovers, but also actively contributes to the conservation of biodiversity.
