Does the nature around Berlin all look the same to you? Then you haven’t yet discovered the diversity of the surrounding area . Here, the spectrum ranges from the world’s largest rose collection in artistically designed gardens to nearly untouched wilderness landscapes. In summer, forests, lakes, meadows, and moors show themselves at their most beautiful, making every trip into nature a special experience. Today we’re sharing a new tip on where it’s especially beautiful: About an hour from Berlin lies the Blumberger Mühle, one of Brandenburg’s most extraordinary nature experience centers. Nestled within the UNESCO Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve , the site combines impressive nature, exciting exhibitions, and architecture that immediately catches the eye.

The facility is located near Angermünde in the Uckermark and serves as the official visitor and information center for the Schorfheide-Chorin UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The building’s architecture is particularly striking; designed to resemble a giant hollow tree stump, it ranks among the region’s most unusual structures.
The Blumberger Mühle opened in 1997 and provides visitors with interactive insights into the natural and cultural landscape of the Uckermark. Inside, guests can explore exhibitions on the themes of forests, water, soil, and biodiversity. At the same time, the center serves as a starting point for exploring the Schorfheide-Chorin UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This is one of Germany’s largest protected areas, covering more than 129,000 hectares of lakes, bogs, forests, and an exceptionally diverse flora and fauna.
Surrounding the nature center is an approximately 13-hectare adventure landscape featuring nature trails, herb gardens, orchard meadows, observation stations, and play areas. Visitors can explore various habitats in the region and observe numerous native animal species. A special highlight is the enclosure for European pond turtles, which are among the rarest reptiles in Germany.

Right next to the Blumberger Mühle is one of Brandenburg’s most important bird sanctuaries. The so-called Blumberger Fischteiche consist of about 20 interconnected ponds and form an important refuge for numerous bird species. Around 200 different species have been recorded here. With a little luck , you can spot gray herons, great white egrets, cormorants, ospreys, white-tailed eagles, or cranes. From several vantage points and observation towers, a sweeping view opens up over the water and reed beds.
In addition to nature observation, the Blumberger Mühle regularly offers guided tours, family programs, exhibitions, and environmental education activities. The grounds also feature a restaurant serving regional products, which adds a culinary highlight to your outing.
