Fortunately, it never gets boring in Berlin, but as soon as the gray winter days are finally over, we often get the urge to travel. If you’re already planning your vacation days for the year, we have a real insider tip for you: How about a city trip to Graz? The renowned Forbes magazine has just voted Austria’s second-largest city into the top 10 travel destinations for 2026.
The annual ranking selects the most exciting places in Europe that are a must-see. Although Nicosia in Cyprus tops the list this year, Graz stands out as a German-speaking recommendation. From Berlin, the Styrian capital is perfect for a short escape from the urban jungle – whether you’re into culture, history, nature, or first-class cuisine. Here are the highlights you have to experience in Graz.
1. Climb the Schlossberg

A visit to Graz without seeing the Schlossberg? Unthinkable! It is the heart of the city. You can take a leisurely walk up, take the Schlossbergbahn funicular, or use the glass elevator. At the top, you will be rewarded with an incredible panorama over the red roofs. But the best part comes on the way back: instead of walking, take the Schlossberg slide. At 170 meters, it is the longest underground slide in the world. You’ll race downhill at speeds of up to 25 km/h.
2. Mediterranean flair in the old town

As soon as you stroll through Graz’s old town, you’ll immediately feel that “La Dolce Vita” vibe. The narrow streets and perfectly preserved Renaissance buildings are almost reminiscent of Italy. The city center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Best of all, everything is within easy walking distance. From the main square to Graz Cathedral to the impressive mausoleum, all the important sights are close together.
3. Coffee break on the floating Murinsel

Despite its history, Graz is also extremely modern. The Murinsel is a futuristic landmark that floats in the middle of the river. Designed in 2003 by New York artist Vito Acconci, it combines contemporary design with urban lifestyle. Two footbridges lead to the glass island. In the café, you can enjoy an espresso or cocktail while taking in the view of the water and the Mur River flowing by.
4. Experience modern romance at Candlelight Bridgerton
Graz also has a lot to offer in terms of events: in the beautiful Heilandskirche, you can experience the popular Candlelight concert series. In keeping with the romantic flair of the city, you can immerse yourself in the world of the Netflix series “Bridgerton. “ A string quartet plays the modern pop hits from the series (from Billie Eilish to Taylor Swift) in a classical setting, all framed by thousands of candles. A real highlight for anyone looking for a touch of Regency elegance.
4. The fascinating double spiral staircase

A real architectural mystery awaits in Graz Castle: the double spiral staircase. The two intertwined stone staircases separate and reunite on each floor. It is affectionately known locally as the “reconciliation staircase” or “kissing staircase. “ It is one of the most significant late Gothic structures in Europe and a perfect subject for your camera. You can find everything you need to know about this unique architectural marvel here.
5. Visit the “Friendly Alien” (Kunsthaus Graz)

When you stand in front of the Kunsthaus Graz, you’ll briefly wonder whether you’re still in Styria or already in a sci-fi movie. Locals affectionately call the building the “Friendly Alien.” With its bluish, organic shape, it forms a stark contrast to the baroque houses around it. Inside, you’ll find changing international exhibitions of contemporary art that are always worth a visit.
6. Immerse yourself in history at the Landeszeughaus

If you like history, you can’t miss the Landeszeughaus. It houses the largest historical weapons arsenal in the world. Over 32,000 suits of armor, swords, and cannons from the 15th to 18th centuries are stacked on four floors. It is less a classic museum and more an impressive time capsule that shows how Graz was once defended.
